A first-timer's guide from Forever Young Spa, Back Bay
Your First Visit to aBoston Med Spa
Everything you need to know before you arrive — what to book, what to expect, and what to do after.
At Forever Young Spa in Back Bay, your first appointment is a no-pressure experience. Arrive 5 minutes early. Our team reviews your skin concerns, explains your options, and customizes every treatment. Most first-timers book a HydraFacial or massage. The whole experience runs 45–75 minutes.
Before Your Appointment
- 01
Stop retinol and prescription retinoids 3 to 5 days before a facial — they make skin more sensitive to exfoliation.
- 02
Arrive without makeup if you are getting a facial — your esthetician will cleanse your skin, but coming clean speeds up the process.
- 03
Avoid shaving the area to be waxed for at least 2 weeks — hair needs to be at least a quarter inch for wax to grip.
- 04
Stay well-hydrated the day before a massage — hydrated muscle tissue responds better to therapeutic work.
- 05
Let us know about any health conditions, allergies, or medications when you book — some treatments have contraindications.
What to Wear
Wear comfortable clothing you can easily change out of. We provide slippers and a robe for all appointments. For facials, you will change into a robe and your head will be wrapped in a soft headband. For massage, you undress to your comfort level and are professionally draped throughout. For stretch therapy, wear form-fitting athletic clothing — leggings, shorts, and a fitted top work best so your provider can see and assist your movement properly.
What Happens When You Arrive
You will be greeted at the front desk and offered water, tea, or herbal refreshments. If it is your first visit, you will complete a brief intake form covering your health history, current skincare routine, and treatment goals. This takes 5 minutes and helps your provider personalize your session.
Your provider will do a short consultation before the treatment begins — reviewing your intake form, asking about any concerns or sensitivities, and confirming what you can expect from the session. This is the right time to ask any questions.
During the treatment, communication is welcome. If pressure is too much or too little, if a product feels uncomfortable, or if the room temperature is off — speak up. Your provider adjusts in real time. There is no such thing as a wrong question during your treatment.

Full reset
Signature massage + basic facial
Back-to-back treatments for clients who want full-body relaxation and a skin refresh in a single visit. Book as a combo or schedule together.
After Your Appointment
After a massage, your muscles may feel slightly tender for 24 to 48 hours — especially after deep tissue work. Drink plenty of water to help flush released metabolic waste from the tissue. Avoid intense exercise the same day.
After a facial, your skin may appear slightly flushed or feel mildly sensitive for a few hours. Keep skin clean, avoid direct sun without SPF, and skip retinol or actives for 24 hours. HydraFacial typically leaves no redness at all. Chemical peels may produce light flaking over 3 to 5 days — this is normal and part of the resurfacing process.
Your provider will give you specific aftercare instructions tailored to your treatment before you leave. If you have questions afterward, you can always call or text us at (617) 982-6186.
Membership vs. Pay-Per-Visit
Pay-per-visit is the right choice for a first appointment, an occasional treat, or if your schedule is unpredictable. No commitment required — book when it works for you.
A membership makes sense once you know you want to come in regularly. Forever Young Spa offers three membership tiers — Maintenance ($125/mo for one session), Consistency ($235/mo for two sessions), and Longevity ($365/mo for three sessions) — each with 10 to 15% off additional services and retail products.
There is no lock-in period. Most clients try two or three pay-per-visit appointments before committing to a membership. Your provider will recommend one if they think it fits your routine.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do before my first med spa appointment?
For your first med spa appointment, stop using retinol or strong exfoliants 3 to 5 days before if you are getting a facial. Avoid shaving the area being waxed for at least 2 weeks beforehand. Stay hydrated in the days before your visit. If you have a major skin event like a cold sore or active breakout, let us know when you book — some services may need to be rescheduled for your safety.
What treatment should I book first at a med spa?
For most first-time visitors, a HydraFacial or a 60-minute Swedish or deep tissue massage is the best starting point. HydraFacial is zero-downtime, works on all skin types, and gives your esthetician a baseline read on your skin for future recommendations. Massage is always appropriate and delivers immediate relaxation and tension relief. Your specific goals — stress, skin texture, acne, tight muscles — should guide your choice.
Do I need a consultation before my first spa treatment in Boston?
At Forever Young Spa, a brief consultation is built into every appointment at no extra charge. Your provider will review your health history, discuss your goals, and confirm the treatment plan before beginning. You do not need to book a separate consultation visit. Just arrive a few minutes early on your first appointment to complete a short intake form.
Is there anything I should avoid before a facial in Boston?
Yes. Before a facial, avoid retinol or prescription retinoids for 3 to 5 days. Skip active exfoliants like glycolic or salicylic acid for 2 to 3 days. Do not get a facial immediately after Botox or filler — wait at least 2 weeks. If you have had laser or a chemical peel recently, let us know at booking. Arriving with clean skin is ideal but not required — we remove makeup as part of the treatment.
Can I wear makeup to my first facial?
You can arrive with makeup on — your esthetician will cleanse it off as the first step of the treatment. However, plan to leave without makeup afterward. After a facial, your skin has been exfoliated and treated, and applying makeup immediately can clog pores or cause irritation. Most clients prefer to keep skin clean for a few hours post-treatment to let their skin breathe and retain the results.
How long is a first-time appointment at Forever Young Spa?
Most first appointments at Forever Young Spa run 45 to 75 minutes for the treatment itself, plus 5 to 10 minutes for your intake form and brief consultation at the start. Plan for about 90 minutes total for your first visit. Follow-up appointments are typically the full treatment duration without the extra intake time. Our team will confirm timing when you book.
