7Days Prep Window
24–48Hr Recovery
3–6Sessions Typical

Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin to stimulate collagen production. Results depend on arriving with a healthy, calm skin barrier — and protecting that barrier while it heals. The prep window begins 7 days before your appointment. Recovery is 24 to 48 hours for most clients.

Prep Timeline: 7 Days Before

Follow these steps in order. Each one serves a specific purpose — the goal is an intact, calm skin barrier on treatment day.

01

Stop retinoids 7 days before

Vitamin A derivatives (tretinoin, retinol, adapalene) sensitize the skin barrier. Stopping 7 days prior gives the barrier time to normalize.

02

Stop acids and exfoliants 5 days before

AHAs (glycolic, lactic), BHAs (salicylic), and vitamin C can thin the barrier and increase sensitivity. Stop 5 days prior.

03

Avoid blood thinners 5 days before

Aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and vitamin E supplements increase bruising at needle sites. Discontinue unless medically required.

04

Come in with clean, bare skin

Arrive at your appointment with no makeup, no serums, and no sunscreen on your face. Clean skin allows proper skin prep.

05

Arrange a recovery day

Plan to do nothing demanding on your face for 24 hours post-treatment. No gym, no sun, no makeup, no event.

06

Stock your aftercare

Have gentle cleanser, hyaluronic acid serum, and SPF 30+ moisturizer ready before your appointment. You'll need them immediately after.

Recovery Guide: After Your Session

Recovery is phase-based. What you apply to your skin in the first 48 hours matters significantly more than normal — the micro-channels allow deeper absorption of everything, including irritants.

TimeframeWhat to Do
Hours 0–24Skin is red and sensitive. Apply only esthetician-recommended recovery serum. No makeup. No actives. No sun. No exercise.
Hours 24–48Redness begins to subside. You may resume mineral makeup if needed. Continue avoiding sweating and direct sun. Gentle cleanser only.
Days 3–5Mild peeling or flaking is normal — do not pick or exfoliate. Continue SPF daily. Avoid retinoids and acids through this phase.
Days 5–7Skin barrier is largely restored. You may resume your full routine carefully. Reintroduce one active at a time to confirm tolerance.
Weeks 4–12Collagen remodeling is ongoing. Results appear gradually. Most clients book the next session at 4 to 6 weeks for a series protocol.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I avoid before microneedling?

In the week before your microneedling appointment: stop retinoids (Retin-A, tretinoin, retinol) 5 to 7 days prior; stop exfoliants (AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C serums) 3 to 5 days prior; avoid blood thinners (aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil) unless medically required; avoid waxing or depilatory creams 3 days prior; avoid prolonged sun exposure 1 week prior. The goal is to arrive with a calm, intact skin barrier. Active irritation increases risk and recovery time.

What should I do after microneedling?

Immediately after: apply only the recommended recovery serum (hyaluronic acid, growth factors) — nothing else for 24 hours. For the first 48 hours: avoid makeup, avoid exercise and sweating, avoid sun exposure, use only gentle cleanser and SPF. For the first week: avoid retinoids, acids, vitamin C, and any active ingredients. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily — the skin is more photosensitive after treatment. Redness typically resolves in 24 to 72 hours.

How long is recovery after microneedling?

Most clients return to normal activities within 24 to 48 hours. Redness resembling a mild sunburn is normal for 1 to 3 days. Mild peeling or flaking may occur 3 to 5 days post-treatment. Full skin recovery and visible results develop over 4 to 12 weeks as collagen remodels. Plan your microneedling appointment at least 1 week before any important event.

Can I wear makeup after microneedling?

Wait at least 24 hours before applying makeup, and ideally 48 hours. When you do resume makeup, use mineral or clean formulations without fragrance or harsh preservatives — the micro-channels created by needling allow greater absorption of what you apply, which means irritants can cause more reaction than usual. Remove makeup gently — no friction.

How many microneedling sessions do I need?

For anti-aging and texture improvement, most clients see significant results after 3 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. For acne scarring, 4 to 6 sessions may be recommended. Monthly maintenance sessions sustain results. The first session produces the least dramatic result — collagen remodeling is cumulative. Don't judge microneedling effectiveness after just one treatment.
