Cosmetic — Jaw Slimming
An overdeveloped masseter creates a wide, square lower-face profile. Repeated Botox treatments cause the muscle to gradually atrophy, narrowing the jaw and tapering the face. Masseter Botox — also called jaw Botox or jaw slimming — involves injecting Botox into the masseter muscle, the large muscle that runs from the cheekbone to the lower jaw. It is used for two distinct goals: therapeutic reduction of teeth grinding (bruxism) and jaw clenching, which can cause headaches, tooth wear, and TMJ pain; and cosmetic jaw slimming, which reduces the width of an overly developed masseter and creates a more tapered facial shape. Many clients seek masseter Botox for both goals simultaneously.
Masseter Botox requires significantly more units than other facial areas because the masseter is a large, powerful muscle. Most clients need 25 to 50 units per side (50 to 100 units total). Men, athletes, and clients who clench heavily tend to need more units. The first treatment may use a conservative dose to assess response — subsequent treatments are adjusted based on how much the muscle responds and weakens.
Masseter Botox lasts 4 to 6 months — longer than cosmetic Botox in expression muscles because the masseter is less active when the treatment is working correctly (less grinding = less muscle activity = slower metabolism of the Botox). Jaw slimming results (reduction in muscle bulk) become visible 4 to 6 weeks after treatment as the muscle begins to atrophy from reduced use. Partially. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders have multiple causes — joint inflammation, disc displacement, bite misalignment — that Botox cannot address. What Botox can address is the muscular component: the hyperactive masseter and temporalis muscles that clench against the TMJ during grinding. For clients whose TMJ pain is primarily driven by muscle overactivity, masseter Botox is highly effective. For clients with structural joint issues, Botox is one component of a broader treatment plan that may include a dentist or oral surgeon.
